10 useful facts about eyelash extensions

eyelash extensions facts tips

eyelash extensions facts tips

Eyelashes are naturally intended to protect the eyes from sweat and dust. But this natural protection gives a woman’s face attractiveness and sexuality. Long fluffy eyelashes make your eyes look bigger and more expressive.

Traditionally, eyelashes have been lengthened in all sorts of ways, and in the 21st century they have learned to lengthen them. 10 curious questions and answers will reveal the most interesting information about eyelash extension.

1. Who invented eyelash extension and when?
The idea of the eyelash extension first took shape in 1916. The famous Hollywood director D.W. Griffith offered the actress Seena Owen gorgeous eyelash extensions. They were primitively crafted by a local human hair wig maker. Various attempts were made to lengthen the eyelashes in the 60s of the XX century, but they were all unsuccessful.
A technique close to modern ones was developed in 2004. In Korea, they came up with “semi-permanent” eyelashes. Artificial eyelashes were fixed to each natural eyelash using strong glue. Eyelash extensions also were mastered in Vietnam, from where the method spread throughout the planet.

2. In which countries is eyelash extension popular?
This fashion invention is in demand in all countries of Europe and America. The best salons are located in the UK and USA.
Asia is also not lagging behind – Japan, China, Thailand, Kazakhstan. The genuine interest of Asian countries is due to the Mongoloid eye shape and the desire to enlarge the eyes through eyelash extensions.
As for the countries of the Muslim East, here eyelash extension is not approved by religion. However, in Dubai and Cairo there are excellent eyelash extension masters, tourists and local ladies use their services.
Russia is also known for the best eyelash extension techniques. The whole world knows about the principle of increasing the Russian volume (Russian volume).

3. Is it dangerous for your health to extend eyelashes?
The risk lies primarily in an allergic reaction to the adhesive. Allergy sufferers experience edema on the outer part of the eyelids and inflammation on the inner surface of the eyelids. Due to irritation, the owners of eyelash extensions scratch their eyelids and break off the hairs. Artificial hairs collect dirt and bacteria, leading to conjunctivitis.
A competently carried out eyelash extension is absolutely safe for health. A separate eyelash, on which a hair was extended, continues to live its own life: it grows, lives and falls out – the growth cycle does not change in any way.

4. What material eyelash extensions are made of?
Artificial eyelashes are made from Synthetic fiber. Such eyelashes have nothing to do with the pile of fur-bearing animals (squirrels, sables, minks). Ultra-flexible synthetic fibers are used in 3D extensions.

5. At what age can eyelashes be extended?
There are no restrictions for adult clients. Experts say that women from 20 to 82 years old turn to them.

6. How long does the effect of the procedure last?
Natural eyelashes are constantly changing – they grow and fall out. Since the artificial hairs are attached to the real ones, they fall out at the same time. A person sheds 4 to 20 natural lashes per day. Accordingly, the same amount of eyelash extensions will be lost. The time for wearing eyelash extensions is from 2 to 4 weeks. Completely natural eyelashes are renewed in a month and a half.

7. Is it possible to extend the shortest eyelashes?
High-class specialists perform the procedure for patients who have lost eyelashes after oncological treatment. On the thinnest and shortest hairs, you can attach an artificial coating.

8. Can I remove eyelash extensions myself?
Artificial hairs are glued to natural hairs with a durable glue. Unfortunate attempts at home are made only by pulling out your own eyelashes by the root. So you cannot do without a specialist who has a special lash glue remover to do it fast and safe.

9. Can I do makeup with mascara?
Better not to. Eyelash extensions make your lash look and actual lashes thicker so it is impossible to wash away all the mascara completely. That’s not healthy and safe to use mascara with eyelash extensions.

10. Do eyelash extensions need special care?
The extended hairs need to be cleaned from dust and natural secretions – sweat, tears. They need to be washed with a special lash shampoo allowed to use in the eye area. Baby shampoo is not suited to this!

Holiday tips

Holiday tips for lash studios

In winter, especially in November and December, Lash Studios are flooded with clients. However, the impressive number of visitors does not mean that you need to forget all the worries of a stable customer flow. You should remember that the sharp decline of clients in January (or lack thereof) depends on your marketing decisions in October and November.
Very often eyelash extension studios cannot track their clients during the winter bustle just before the New Year. They don’t know who the client is, how they have found out about the studio or whether they are new or a regular. This is important, because some people, for example, only do their lashes once in winter as an annual ritual.
Often lash studios neglect such clients, and that is an absolutely wrong approach. Each of them should be important to the company. Each visitor – whether a regular or a new one – pays for the services, and all of them need to be taken care of without exceptions. When trying to attract new clients to your lash studio never forget about your regulars.

• Package deals

December promotional deals can be offered for just about any type of services. For example, you can offer eyebrow correction free of charge with a classic extension or free decoration with volume extensions. This way the client will see real savings in choosing a package deal. Moreover, the studio can afford offering December deals without fear of inflicting financial damages on itself, as it compensates for the workload before the holidays.
On the eve of winter, a lash studio owner needs to think about December clients in October or November in order to avoid a decline in January and the problems that accompany such decline.
Offering your own money-equivalent items such as gift certificates is an enticing marketing choice for January and first part of February. You can offer every client who visits your studio from December 15 to December 31 a certificate of $30 or more. This gift certificate can only be used within a specific time limit typically during the predicted decline period. The first stage typically takes place in the first two weeks of January, and the second one lasts until mid February.
It may seem that these gift cards come with a large cost to your business, but it only seems that way. Providing the clients with a specific amount instead of a more abstract percentage discount incentivises a client to spend this amount (and more) on your cervices. In return you receive a cash flow that more than covers the discounted amount.
One of the advantages of a gift certificate is that your regular client can give it away to their friends or relatives, providing you with a flow of visitors. This gives you confidence that after the holidays people will come to your studio and you will see some fresh face among them.
The amount you are willing to allocate on gift certificates should be calculated based on previous years’ experience. This way not you do you get the metrics right, but also track the return on your investment and how the promotion performs.
Do not confuse gift certificates with coupons. The audience of sites offering coupon are people constantly hunting for discounts, and they are not (nor will they become) your customers.

• Gift sets

Winter is the gift season. It is the time any self-respecting supplier creates various home care kits on December holidays’ eve, which customers can buy as a present for their relatives and friends.
The gift set should be handed over in branded packaging and at a cost favourable for the buyer. This way, you will both win points with your clients and increase sales in one fell swoop. Customers who bought such a set are also likely to return to your lash studio afterwards buy the same eyebrow pencil or eyelash shampoo, for example. But this time they will be doing so at a retail price.
Winter gift sets can be put together with whatever products you have on-hand in your studio. Usually there are always products that are stocked in abundance for various reasons like eyelash foam or facials. They can be used as pieces of a gift set for the client.

• Appreciation tokens

Other holidays should also be factored in your marketing plan, including those that come well before the December holiday season like Thanksgiving.
You can organize all-prize lotteries for clients and give them small souvenirs like product samples, hair combs, certificates for extension correction, etc. The key thing in such drawings are guaranteed prizes and a pleasant experience for your clients.

• Cross promotions

Cross-marketing in the salon business should approached be with great caution to avoid nonsensical advertising moves along the lines of, “buy a car and get a free t-shirt.” Large differences in perceived value between the purchase and the gift will only irritate your customers.
When choosing a cross-promotion partner you should avoid companies who offer services which have little or no overlap with the ones you offer like restaurants, clothing stores, etc. A specialized massage studio, for instance, will make for a much more successful cross-promotional partnership.

We hope these tips will help you keep the client traffic to your lash studio flowing!

Salon vs home

Actually there are several points of reference.

I’ll start with the salon, this is the easiest option.

Requirements: So, you can start working in the salon immediately after completing the eyelash extension course or online eyelash extension course. If the salon requires a certificate of your training, you must provide it. You can also be asked to provide information about your health and, of course, demonstrate your skills on 1-2 models.

It usually takes a few weeks to build a portfolio doing very cheap or free work, but this will go to your accumulated experience, well, and you need to take your first photos from somewhere, right?

Startup: it all depends on what is provided by the salon. At best, everything will be provided to you – from materials and space to advertising, customers and their client communication and support. But the more the salon works for you, the less you will be paid. And this is a normal practice. Let’s compare with the master at home.

Benefits of the salon: everything is done for you, except of eyelash extensions to the client. Your expenses are minimal. Salon in general is more luxury and prestigious than any home business unless you live in a glamorous manor.

Cons: you get less salary, part of it goes to the salon.

Teamwork – is it a pro or con – is up to you.

I believe that if you are a beginner and are not ready to invest big money in a normal home business, if you plan at all, then it is best to work in the salon. And in a year or two you will know exactly what you want from the profession, where you want to develop, if at all.

Thieves

Do not think that you can drag off the clientele from salon, especially if you are not an expert. Or that salon owners are so stupid and don’t realize this can happen (maybe even you are thinking of opening your own salon occasionally, m?) Minimum half of the technicians go to salon with the thought of taking away clients.

The  truth is that people often go to a salon because it is a salon. People who go to the technician, most often go to get services from the expert. If you are a good average, you can hardly get more than a couple of customers from the salon after you leave. These are not empty words, but the experience of many of my colleagues who have salons. Plus, those who go to the salon often go there, because this place is simply more convenient by location.

Clients are ready to go by car an hour or even two if the technician is so awesome that they don’t care spend so much time, as some of my clients do. That’s because they want to come to me. For which I am immensely grateful, of course. However, I also ride quite far to my techs. So before you think about stealing customers from the salon, besides what the salon can advertise for you, think why the customer would decide to follow you?

Master solo

What do you need and when to start. You can start immediately after passing the course. The first couple of weeks you are preparing a portfolio, and then work.

Startup: you need to purchase the minimum of eyelash extension supplies. These are a massage table, a lamp, a chair, a humidifier, trays of eyelashes and other materials for extension. At this stage, the amount may be about US$650, depending on the number of eyelashes and quality. If you are doing paid advertising, here the amount can be from US$200 per month and over.

In general, a good FULL home startup will cost you about US$800-1000 in North America and a less in the countries of the former USSR. Usually the budget set without paid advertising contains a couch, a humidifier and the most basic set of materials. This will cost about US$500.

Of course, this does not include the cost of water, electricity, possible marketing courses, and so on. Now, I think, it is more clear why working in the cabin is somewhat simpler.

Pros: you do not depend on the employer

Cons: the whole process of organization, accounting and all costs are borne by you, which is also quite financially sensitive at the time of collecting a permanent client base.

If you are sure that you do not want to work in the salon and plan to open your own business in the beauty industry, then be ready for a longer and more costly start. However, if you do everything right, in six months you will earn normal salary, and in a year or two you will be fully booked with the regular client base.

It is always up to you to decide, just always try to put yourself on other people’s place and compare the points of view.

#2 Is it allowed to wash eyelash extensions?

The topic about water free eyelash glue is still a point of contention. So do you still need to keep out of a swimming pool and shower after having eyelash extension done or not?

Fortunately with Angel Wings lash glue you CAN and you SHOULD wash your eyes every day and can do it right after the application.

There are still lots of older types of glue that have restrictions about getting your eyes wet or using oils. Unfortunately, even if the glue restricts you from getting your eyelash extensions wet, this restriction applies only for few hours or at maximum for a day.

Some clients roam the internet and find lots of misinformation about lash extension aftercare. Many people think that if they will not wash their eyes at all, the extensions will last longer or if they wash their eyes, they will lose or damage the extensions.

I believe it is technicians’ fault of not telling their clients about the proper aftercare of the lash extension. Just imagine. Our eyelashes are made to collect dirt and not to let it go inside the eye. But if you have extensions and put on makeup, most likely it is going to stick in between the lashes, creating oily and sticky substance that collects more dust and dirt from the air and sweat. If you do not wash out this “dirt burger”, it will become a delicious treat for the germs and parasites. So it is not only important to wash the lashes, but if you or your client cannot live without makeup, they should wash the lashes regularly to make sure there is no makeup residue left between makeup applications.

The best way to take care of lash extensions is to buy a special lash shampoo. Angel Wings foam cleanser comes in a foam form and will not hurt your eyes at all. Moreover, it does not only clean the lashes from dirt, but also removes some types of bacteria.
As the lash industry always develops, washing natural eyelashes before eyelash extension in many salons has become a regular part of the service. The same can be said about washing the extensions right after the procedure to reduce the chance of irritation if the client has sensitive eyes.

#1 Why right after appliance lash extensions pop out when you brush them?

A lot of lashmakers say there is something wrong with the glue, because their lash extensions pop out when they brush a fresh set.

Today I will tell you three facts why it can happen and why in many cases it has nothing to do with the glue. Having been working on huge variety of different types of eyelash glue from Russia, Europe and also from Canada and US I have noticed that every trademark and every manufacturer sets their own conditions for using their glue.

Some types of glue prefer lower humidity and lower temperature, while others require rather high temperature and humidity. Some types of eyelash glue will not work at all if your room temperature is below 24°C or if the humidity is below 35 or 40%. In the end you are the one who has to learn and follow the rules that manufacturer or distributor indicates. You have to know the product that you use well just like you would need to know any new electrical appliance you buy for your home. It all comes down to reading and following the instructions.

Firstly, to avoid lashes popping out due to “unknown cases” you have to get everything you need to control the environment at all times while you are working. I am saying this every time on my training sessions and to the clients who want me to work at their place. Without the humidifier, dehumidifier, heater, and air conditioner you will not be able to feel secure and to control the environment properly ensuring your supplies work.

We all work in different regions and countries with widely different levels of humidity and temperature. I will give you few examples where you can have troubles with lash extensions popping out or the glue that does not seem to work. I will also give you a few tips on how to avoid it.

Example number one. In most countries the summer is a hot and humid season. As we know most of glue types, as well as Angel Wings glue, work in the temperature range of 23-26°C and humidity range from 40 to 65%. So if either the humidity or the temperature is higher, the glue will polymerize super-fast or just undergo shock polymerization. Popping out lash extensions always come with the summer heat. So to avoid this you need to keep your room cool, ensure that air moves around your working area and change the glue drop more frequently during work.

Example number two. The lashes can pop out right after application when you use an overly fast glue for your technique. It can also be the reason why your client loses all the lash extensions in just a few days. How does this happen? You dip the extension into the glue, transfer it to the client’s lash… and because the glue dries too fast, when you put the extension on the natural lash it sticks with the glue almost dry. You may take too much time separating the lash or you do not tend to work fast in general. In either case the only solution to use this glue is to minimize the time you spend from dipping the extension into the glue to applying it onto the lash.

Example number three. Bad preparation of the lashes. One of the most important things when you use Angel Wings glue (as well as other types) is preparation of the natural lashes. You have to clean them from all the skin oil, makeup residue, etc. This will make sure that you glue the extension on a lash itself and not on yesterday’s makeup or a layer of night cream. So you better careful with the preparation and make sure that natural lashes are absolutely clean.

Armed with the knowledge of these three reasons, you can avoid most of the cases of lashes popping out.

Why this kind of events become more and more popular all over the world and why so many people want to try themselves in this disciplines? I hope the article below will be informative for those who never took part in lash championships.

The Basic Information about Eyelash Extension Championships

Lash Championships are made to unite people in lash industry and are called upon greatly raise the quality of lash-makers’ work.

All championships have different categories for participants and different nominations. They can differ from one championship to another but in general they’re all similar. There are Junior category, Masters, Experts and sometimes more. Category depends on a working experience of the participant – years of trainer’s status.
Nominations are different too. There can be Classic, 2D (or sometimes 2-3D), 3-5D volume, Mega volume, Fantasy lash decoration and online competitions. Sometimes on lash championships there are brow nominations too. Every nominations is chargeable, but the more you take – the less you pay.

“I’m scared…”

Believe me, 99 out of 100 people are scared to take part in the championship. I was scared all the time. But that’s the point – you go there also to fight your fears and gain self-confidence, because you get a new level in the career anyway.

To make it more easy – just imagine – there are about 5 people for one cup (sometimes even less!), so if you prepare, take training, try to be a tiny bit better and more confident – you have more chances!

The process

First of all and the most important is to read the conditions of the competition. Often in technical nominations there is a difference from what you do every day for your clients, but you have to follow main criteria. The winner gets more points and points you get from following the criteria. Use creativity, but don’t get too much over the main technical requirements.

A place for creativity and originality

In Fantasy lash decoration nomination the most important parts are originalty of the idea, complexity of a decoration, Integrity of the image. There are also additional criteria: hair styling, make-up, costume etc. It requires high professionalism too. To earn more points you’d need to get ready on all this items.

If you’re not skillful enough in hairdressing or makeup it’s better to find a team of skillful specialists. Crating the whole image is a very demanding work and victory will depend on your ability to work in a team.

Technical nominations

In Classic nomination there are also such things to get points like general impression too so be careful to choose the right effect to your model. Among other criteria there are  “glued natural eyelashes”, “cleanliness of work”, “contact surface”, “volume”, “eye modeling”, “symmetry” and an important assessment of the technique (“distance from the eyelid”, “direction”, “smooth outline”). If you’re not familiar with this criteria to a championship there are special training where your trainer will explain in details all the criteria requirements and will show right and wrong in other’s and maybe your work.

One of the important moments that greatly influences your victory is your model.  Your model has to be perfect – a beautiful woman with nice strong not too thick eyelashes, interesting slit, comfortable natural curl etc.
Some participants get surprised when know about this requirements, but think of it from another side – you’ll never see a model in makeup with a bad skin condition or a hair stylist’s model with damaged hair. Here it’s the same, people have to see all the beauty of your work and the best of your skill to create extensions.

The judges are usually more loyal to junior participants as they don’t have a lot of experience, although with high competition there may be more rigorous selection. Anyway with healthy nerves and good preparation you can do a tidy job.

In Volume extensions sometimes there are limitations in participant’s experience. In Lash Global Championship Juniors are not allowed to take part in Mega Volume eyelash extension. The choice is more strict. You have to make accurate fans (no pre-made fans allowed) but despite you have more time then in Classic, to make a flawless work under stress, put a fan on every lash can make only a qualified experienced technician.

After a special before-championship training and a stressful limited in time work on a championship even those who couldn’t make a qualitative and fast work before accelerate and make a better quality work. Even one championship greatly changes you and your lashing for the better.

Advances

Lash championship is a great chance to fight your fears and know for sure what are your strong and weak sides, accelerate your work and enhance your status as a lash-maker in your city. You’ll meet a lot of people of lash industry not only from your city or country but from all over the world!

Even if the participant does not become a winner, he will for sure learn not only to speak in public, but also to behave more concentrated under any extreme circumstances. The competition provides an opportunity to adequately estimate competitiveness, analyze not only your skills, but also the skills of the winner, plan further training, understand what was is missing on the way to success. It is always possible to consult the judge about possible mistakes and work on them.
For organizers of the competitions it is an event of a great importance, maybe even more than for the participants themselves. The development of a new industry, which is becoming even more popular, thanks to competitions, the identification of promising and talented masters both among professionals and juniors, gives the opportunity to proudly call the work of a lash-maker a prestigious profession.

For the winner the competition is the title and reward from the organizers and sponsors, a solid addition of confidence and popularity among colleagues and customers, a rise in career one step higher and many unique and profitable offers from large companies.

To start your path to victory the main thing is to find the courage to try your hand, not coming up with an excuse for workload, lack of finance, time, etc. Consult an expert, simple advice from professionals takes a little time. If there is an opportunity to pass training one or more days from a qualified specialist who has experience in this matter – use it (our eyeelash training info you can find here). Pay attention to the selection of models for the contest, very carefully and meticulously take this choice. Track the time of your full set from start to finish, then according to the criteria analyze the errors and work out. Work out to automatism in order to prevent any situation that can knock you out of balance and clarity. Believe me, nobody has ever managed to lose with the ideal work or to win with a bad quality work and an inharmonious image of the model.

You have to pay attention to all the details. It happens that there is a big competition and because of the slightest, smallest imperfections  you  don’t get only one piont that distances you from a winning place. BUT in these cases the judges and organizers try to praise this people somehow.

If you have at least a drop of talent you won’t leave unnoticed and if you think it already had happened you have to improve yourself, add patience, information from training, use help and work out.

If you keep trying your efforts you won’t leave without your reward no matter if it’s a winning place on a championship, financial independence or  general acceptance.

GOOD LUCK!

QUALITY FREAK

My idea of quality services and supplies.

I never wanted to work with cheap, low quality supplies or to do a very inexpensive (and, as a result, inferior) work. I’m a quality freak. That’s why I went to championships to learn what I’m worth. My prices have always been premium, but my clients know what they are paying for. Currently Angel Wings does not accept new clients and only provides services to our regular customer base.

Applying this idea of perfect quality to lash supplies, I had a vision to create the best line of lash product to work with. As a multiple lash champion and prize winner I received lots of presents and had a chance to try many brands some of them good and others not so good. I put together all desired qualities like 20-line boxes, non-sticky covers, no glue residue, absolute minimum of short defective lashes in a lash tray, a uniform curl, a good grip, keeping the curl well, and many others. I have spent time collecting my expert knowledge about lash supplies. After 8 more months of testing and research I was able to design the product line I had dreamt of.

From Champion to champions.

Our adhesive is made on Korean factory for my special demand.

It was first made in 2017 to match the needs of Lash Championship participants. As a Champion myself, Judge and Sponsor I gave it to the winners of Strictly come lashes championship, UK, the best try I could have and surprisingly it became and still is our best seller. It went through a few adjustments. There were 2 main types in the beginning I was choosing from to find the final one. Now I have stopped on the formulation I personally and most of my old buyers like most.
I care and love my vocation, so it makes me extremely proud to offer Angel Wings product line I have created.

EDUCATION

I never considered getting noticed or being invited to events by other technicians. However, in only one year I’ve become a judge and a speaker in over 30 international lash events and a highly demanded trainer.
I understand that staying in one place in the lash industry makes the value of your work steadily decline. New trends emerge and new techniques appear all the time. Additional information gets revealed be it new facts about the lash glue or something entirely novel, which requires further study and experimentation.
This is what draws me as a speaker to be one of the people who does research for the benefit of our industry, brings up and pours light on new and unexplored topics.
The idea of offering fellow lash artists something new and useful is truly inspiring to me.
That’s why I aim to create many ways to share the knowledge. Lash Global championship and conference brings together the best lash specialists from all over the world. Also I have launched an online platform for courses and lessons. Aside from that I offer many absolutely free options to learn including my YouTube channel, professional blog, Facebook and Instagram community groups, as well as Lash Global magazine.
Training is all about innovation. Classic and Volume extensions are already old news. Nowadays most of the clients want volume extensions. But to provide this service new lash technicians need to go through two periods of training (classic and then volume) and spend a significant amount of time practicing before they start their volume course.
